The maximum penalty for the educational centers that sell diplomas is to be closed for a year. Then they could operate again.
The National Council of Higher Private University Education (CONESUP) admits that the penalty is an example of the weak legal frame which controls the higher private education. As consequence, Mauricio Azofeifa, Council spokesman, declared that they are presenting a reform to the Legislative Assembly.
Currently, the judicial authorities are investigating San Francisco de Dos Ríos campus at the Universidad de San José for apparent trade on diplomas.
The Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ) said that the people who bought the diplomas could also be investigated for falsifying or using false documents.
