A preliminary count by the National Rice Corporation (CONARROZ) found that about 1,100 hectares of rice were damaged by Hurricane Otto in Upala and Los Chiles.
Minor Barboza, executive director of the organization, reported that this figure could be increased once inspections in the remaining communities in the Huetar Norte area have been completed.

Yesterday CONARROZ began a tour of the regions they feel were the most vulnerable.
Some farmers in Upala had sprouted crops, while others were about to prepare the land or start the sowing process. We are also evaluating the Chorotega, Brunca and Central Pacific regions to have more accurate data on these preliminaries,”
said Barboza.
