Costa Ricans are buying more cellphones, according to a study made by the Telecommunications Viceministry. In 2015, there were 156 cell-phone lines by every 100 inhabitants, which represents a 5 percent growth.
Five telecommunication companies provided data compiled in the study. This information is being used to build the Digital Gap Index (IBD in Spanish), whose goals are to monitor the telecommunication sector and provide statistics for drafting public policies.
Cell-phone usage growth has allowed Costa Rica reducing its digital gap, said the minister of Science and Technology, Marcelo Jenkins.
Official data shown cellphone usage has been increasing from 2006 to 2013. In 2014 this index decreased.
In comparison with stastistics of the Organization for Cooperation and Economic Development (OCED), Costa Rica’s cellphone usage index is only below to Estonia, Italy, Austria, Luxembourg and Poland.
