On Monday, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said the world will “most likely” beat the temperature record in 2016, with an average of + 1.2 °C compared to pre-industrial levels.
If that is confirmed, the twenty-first century will have registered 16 of the 17 warmest years since (world temperature) records began”
at the end of the nineteenth century, reported WMO.
During the UN conference on climate (COP22) held in Marrakech, the organization said
It seems that 2016 will be the warmest year”
on record so far, surpassing the previous year’s data.
The warming trend increased in 2015/2016 because of El Niño, the weather phenomenon that affects the Pacific.
With warm air currents, El Niño causes temperature increases approximately every five years. It began to fade towards the end of spring 2016.
