The migratory crisis experienced in Costa Rica months ago is only a memory. Today there are only about 80 migrants between the southern and northern borders, a very small number compared to the thousands of Africans and Haitians who have already passed through Costa Rica.
About 22,000 migrants have touched Costa Rican soil in recent months, and about 8,000 Cubans who entered the country in 2015.
According to the Minister of Communication, Mauricio Herrera, at the moment there are 50 people in the Care Center in La Cruz, and another 30 in the Care Center in the South Zone.
Currently, according to official reports, less than 50 extra-continental visitors are arriving in the country each week.
Once they enter the country, they are given a 25-day transit visa, which can be extended for another equal period, during which time people travel through Costa Rica to go to Nicaragua.
In that country there is a blockade by the authorities, so the migrants are looking for other exits to follow their route towards the United States.
They occasionally return people and they are beaten, so we have to assist them and receive them again in the care center,”
explained Herrera.
What about those who leave? Costa Rica loses track of them.
