228 DUI arrests in January

228 drivers were arrested in January for driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPT), these people were referred to the Public Ministry.

In addition, 21 more drivers were fined for traveling in these conditions.

For each alcohol-related death behind the wheel, the Traffic Police managed to get 62 drivers intoxicated off the road.

Mario Calderón, director of the Traffic Police, explained that the number of alcohol-related deaths behind the wheel fell to a third, compared to the data from December.

Only in the first month of the year, 3,299 breathlizer tests were conducted, more than 100 per day, and only 7.5% were positive with a fine or with criminal proceedings as a consequence.

Compared with 2016, it is a significant reduction in positive cases, since last year blood alcohol cases accounted for 11% (2,260) of the 24,279 tests performed throughout the year.
