In the last 5 years, 248,074 taxpayers registered as independent professionals have filed irregularities in their tax returns: they have lied about their incomes.
The General Directorate of Taxation revealed that as a result of an investigation, the behavior of educators, doctors, business administrators, accountants, engineers, computer scientists and lawyers who filed tax returns between 2011 and 2015 was analyzed.
These people reported minimum incomes, but their signs of wealth, such as the purchase of real estates and personal property, show a much higher level of purchasing power than the one they declare each year. In addition, some of them applied a double exoneration or abused the tax credits that can be applied regarding children.
It is very reprehensible that professionals, who have the training and information necessary to follow the law, are having these irregularities(…) we are going after all those who are not paying the corresponding taxes,
expressed Director of Taxation Juan Carlos Gómez.
To pay taxes honestly and on time will always be cheaper than facing the Treasury and the penalties for non-compliance.
