Data from the Ministry of Health revealed on Wednesday show that there would be 3 possible cases of microcephaly associated with zika.
The first case is a baby in Puntarenas, whose test results were negative, even though his mother had the virus last year.
There are 2 probable cases in the province of Puntarenas. One is from a 40-year-old mother, the other from a 16-year-old mother. They both had zika during their pregnancies,
confirmed Daniel Salas, Director of Surveillance of the Ministry of Health.
Both mothers were among the 150 pregnant women with zika in 2016.
According to the doctor, one of the children is stable, while the other is more delicate. Both babies are classified as probable cases. In one case, the test results were negative for the virus. In the other, the results are pending.
There are 3 cases in total. We are very concerned about the issue of pregnant women. Women living in places with many Aedes aegypti, where there are dengue and zika outbreaks, have to be careful not to expose themselves to bites by using repellents, mosquito nets, and protecting themselves during sexual intercourse. Nine months can make a difference in the life of a little one,
said Salas.
This week, the country confirmed 110 zika, including 16 pregnant women, so it is likely that these malformations continue to appear in future births.
