An earthquake awoke hundreds of Costa Ricans this Sunday.
The quake was recorded at 5:34 a.m., about 15 kilometers north of Quepos, Puntarenas.
At 9:08 a.m. another movement of the same magnitude was recorded in a nearby area, 17 kilometers north of Dominical.
Ronny Quintero, a seismologist from OVSICORI, says they received reports of strong earthquakes in the Central Valley.
It was due to a local failure. Whenever there are earthquakes in those areas, you can really feel them in the Central Valley, mainly in the South. We have reports in Rohrmoser, Curridabat, Desamparados and other areas,”
said Quintero.
Following last Thursday’s earthquake in Cartago, the aftershocks continue. The movement of 5.5 degrees recorded in the area of Capellades caused damage to some houses. Three days later, the earth is still moving.
This Sunday registered 2 replicas. The first one was at 7:33 a.m., with a magnitude of 3.5 degrees, 6 kilometers north of Cartago Pacayas. The second one, occurred at 8:21 a.m. in the same zone and had a magnitude of 2.8 degrees.
It is normal that after a large earthquake there are many aftershocks. The quakes’ magnitude is decreasing, but it could continue this week,”
added Quintero.
The expert ruled out that the telluric events have some relation to Turrialba Volcano’s activity. The colossus has shown no significant activity in 10 days.
