With 40 votes in favor and 12 against, the Legislative Assembly approved a motion to ask the Executive Branch to freeze the application of a protocol against suicide carried out by the Ministry of Public Education (MEP), at least until it is studied more thoroughly.
The legislators who supported the motion were those of the parties Social Christian Unit (PSUC), National Restoration (PRN), and National Liberation (PLN). They were against the Citizen Action Party (PAC), the Frente Amplio, and Yorlenni León from PLN.
The motion was accompanied by a long afternoon of questions against Minister of Education, Edgar Mora, due to his statements about suicide.
We have to ask which organizations intervened, whether they consulted experts in that area or not. It is the power of this parliament in the field of political control to ask for accounts for that, if it’s our business… When you slip you grabs something and the Minister, when he fell, grabbed and brought the TV, the ornaments, and everything,”
said the head of the National Restoration faction Carlos Avendaño.
The independent Erick Rodríguez was stronger and requested the resignation of the official.
It is important that the Minister stops his circus. This gentleman does not know about Education and he has no shame and he stays in office, in any other place he would have left,”
said Rodríguez.
The liberationist Ana Karine Niño agreed with the fact that Mora’s statements on the subject of suicide ended up “muddying” the protocol.
However, no legislator pointed out what are the errors or details in the protocol, which was developed by specialists in the MEP.
