About 40,000 people in cantons of Alajuelita, Escazú and Santa Ana will endure water shortages from now until mid-May, due to traditional rationing made by AyA during months with low rainfall. Water will be generally cut off between the hours of 10am to 4pm, and between 9pm and 5am. Homes and businesses that have water storage tanks are unlikely to be affected.
AyA carries drinking water to 1.2 million people in the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM). The affected 40,000 people this year represent 3.3 percent of the population.
