Since the fishing ban was implemented in the Gulf of Nicoya last month, the National Guard has seized about 8 kilometers of gillnets and arrested five captains for being linked to illegal fishing in the area.
However, the authorities notice a decrease in illegal fishing and attribute it to a greater awareness from local fishermen, who have understood the ban is a method to protect maritime resources, which also ensures they are able to find a stable source of work.
The fishing ban will be in force until August, 30th, 2016.
