According to a report by the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI), the country experienced 500 earthquakes in January.
The most important one occurred on January 20th at 10:54 p.m. The 4.7-degree, 32-kilometer-deep earthquake had an epicenter located east of Punta Banco, Puntarenas.
However, the population only felt five out of those 500 tremors, including one of 2.9 degrees on January 21th at 7:05 p.m. in Alajuela.
The distribution of seismicity during this month is classified as normal by the OVSICORI, with many movements in the Central Pacific and eastern Central Valley.
Diffuse seismicity was also observed in the south, southwest and southeast of Cartago.
The institution said that, normally, there is a high level of seismic activity in the south regions of Ciudad Neily and Paso Canoas.
