6 Costa Rican students will be chosen to travel to The United States in August 2017 to pursue a 4-year scholarship in an American university. All expenses will be paid.
The Walton Program is an initiative designed 31 years ago by the Walton family: owners and founders of the supermarket chain Walmart.
They aim to reward Costa Rican students who have excellent grades, with a school average over 85 and aged from 17 years old to 21 years old. The prize is to study at John Brown University, Harding University or Ozarks University.
The careers are on business issues, Engineering, Computer Science, Psychology, Education, Communication, among others.
Mariela Pacheco, Coordinator of Walmart’s Corporate Affairs, explained that about 100 Ticos have been the beneficiaries of the program. This time, the registration process will last until October 2nd.
It is a scholarship that covers everyting, it provides all the thing that a person needs, except what it has to do with passport and American visa: chosen students must take care of that. The program gives a monthly financial support, it pays the round trip tickets, it also pays health insurance and when starting the fall season, extra money to buy winter clothes is given,
explained Pacheco.
Students who are elected must sign an agreement stating that once they finish their careers, they will return to the country.
