Humans are not a natural prey for crocodiles. However, it is important to respect their territory.
Therefore, follow these six basic tips to minimize the risk of an attack from this powerful predator.
1. Get information: If you plan to visit beaches, rivers or ponds, talk to locals and ask them if there are crocodiles in the area. Laura Porras, Wildlife Researcher at the National University (UNA), states that this is a golden rule and applies to all types of potentially dangerous animals, such as snakes.
2. Avoid walking with dogs or children in places with crocodiles: José Eduardo Cháves, owner of Jose’s Crocodile River Tour, added that these animals are opportunistic and lazy, so they prefer small prey that are easy to capture.
3. Do not walk or camp on the bank of a busy river: Installing a tent near a busy river can increase the chances of an attack. Do not leave food exposed, at any time, near your tent or camp. While it is true that crocodiles are more active at night, they can also attack by day.
4. Before diving, throw stones into the water: These animals are very sensitive to sound waves, therefore, their first reaction will be to “hover” part of the head to inspect the area.
5. NEVER feed a crocodile: According to CrocBITE, the prestigious Australian crocodile website, if you offer them food, reptiles will immediately associate the presence of humans with food that is easily accessible and therefore they will approach with more confidence.
6. Stay away from crocodile nests and their offspring: When it comes to defending their offspring, adult females are more aggressive than normal. If you get too close, even 10 meters, these animals will take it as an invasion of their territory and as a clear sign of danger.
