Puntarenas’ beaches are literally full of garbage.
According to Luis Guillermo Brenes, environmental manager of the Municipality of Puntarenas, the largest amount of waste is located at Pochote, Cocal and La Principal beaches.
It will take three to four weeks to clean the beaches.
Edgar Gutiérrez, minister of Environment and Energy (MINAE), stated that the application of Solid Wastes Law in Costa Rica is under the municipal jurisdiction.
It is not only necessary to have appropriate laws but also to comply them. I’m worried about the contamination of Costa Rica’s beaches, which tends to come from urban centers, such as the case of Tárcoles beach and throughout the Pacific-Central coast where pollution comes from waste caused on the central plateau,
stated Gutierrez.
