The National Network of Care and Child Development is a flagship projects for the administration of President Laura Chinchilla, and to date has opened 18 centers. The government now hopes to open 30 more centers within the next four months, in a program which to date has cost 30 billion colones ($60 million) for infrastructure and equipment.
Each center serves children from families in poverty and vulnerable social conditions, and provides nutrition, preschool education, and 10 hour day care. Working families can enroll their children in a pre-school or day care for a monthly payment between 59,000 and 102,000 colones, which is subsidized by the government.
