The future of the relations between Costa Rica and the United States is still difficult to predict but it raises many questions about it.
There are reasons for the doubts: USA is Costa Rica’s main trade partner and Trump warned in his campaign that foreign trade policies would vary, with the aim of ordering and strengthening “their own home”.
The prevailing uncertainties are:
– The drop in the markets is going to continue until Trump defines what he will do in commercial matters.
– Trump’s policy regarding drug trafficking is unknown. He didn’t speak about the subject during his campaign.
-It is unknown how will the US international cooperation be. That country is investing a huge amount of money in the northern triangle of Central America. Although this investment does not come directly to Costa Rica, it does influence the country because it improves the conditions of its neighbors. If the cooperation decreases, the condition of our neighbors could be affected.
Trump won the presidency by getting 290 electoral votes, more than the 270 required to succeed Barack Obama.
His democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, won 218 electoral votes in a shocking defeat for the former Secretary of State.
