A patient underwent an awake craniotomy

January 5, 2017 by Staff News Writer

A man from Litarán became the first patient to undergo an awake brain surgery in Liberia Hospital. Although his tumor was benign, within the time it could have threatened his life.

The surgery, also called awake craniotomy with intraoperative brain mapping, aimed to treat the tumor and protect the functionality areas in order not to affect the patient.

The surgery was performed on January 3rd and lasted about 6 hours.

The Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS) informed that 2 neurosurgeons, 2 clinical psychologists, 2 anesthesiologists, an instrumentalist and 3 circulating nurses were part of the intervention.

This was the first surgery of this type in this medical center.
