A group of legislators delivered a statement calling on the Government of Costa Rica to reject any action that violates human rights in Venezuela. The document was received by Foreign Minister Manuel González.
Legislators of the National Liberation Party (PLN) and the Libertarian Movement walked from the Legislative Assembly to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to deliver the manifesto to the official. However, the note was also signed by congressmen of Partido Social Cristiana (PUSC), Restauración Nacional, Alianza Demócrata Cristiana (ADC) and Accesibilidad sin Exclusión (PASE).
In the statement, lawmakers express their concern over the murder, in just one week, of 20 unarmed Venezuelan citizens who were demonstrating against Nicolás Maduro’s regime, the attack on a maternal and child hospital that forced the staff to evacuate newborns and the military entry to a Catholic temple to attack Cardinal Jorge Urosa Savino.
According to the legislators, it is urgent that agreements and measures are taken to ensure the following:
-Recognition of the National Assembly and the full restoration of its constitutional powers.
-Opening of a humanitarian channel that allows the entry of food and medicines to temporarily solve the alarming levels of shortage and lack of supply.
-Freedom for political prisoners.
-Presentation of an integral electoral timetable that clearly determines the times for the elections of governors, mayors and President of the Republic.
In the manifesto, they ask the Government of Costa Rica:
-A firm position of international rejection of any act that violates human rights.
-To condemn the existence of political or civil-resistance prisoners.
-To recognize the need for the activation of humanitarian aid channels to alleviate the serious situation that affects the population in the face of the scarcity of basic foods and medicines.
-To inform the international community that the Government of Costa Rica will not accredit a diplomatic representative in Venezuela until there is a sincere disposition from Maduro’s regime for dialogue and for the cessation of repression against civil population.
