President Luis Guillermo Solis denounced the “inefficiency” of international pressure to help solve the crisis in Venezuela.
It is not that there is paralysis… but inefficiency, given the nature of the crisis,”
said the Costa Rican president in a meeting with correspondents at the Casa de América in Madrid.
I don’t think we can say we are close to a political dialogue that has so far been ineffective,”
acknowledged Solís, referring to the dialogue between Nicolás Maduro’s government and the opposition, currently at a standstill.
Solís acknowledged that there has been a very limited management of regional multilateral organizations to find solutions to the crisis in Venezuela, which for a little more than a month has moved to the streets with in protests and riots where 37 people have died.
In that sense, he said that the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) still has
a large number of countries supporting Maduro and therefore blocking initiatives from other countries,”
such as Costa Rica, that demands respect for Human rights, release of political prisoners and an electoral calendar in Venezuela.
The consensus is not strong enough to ensure a single action,”
said the president.
Costa Rica in no way wants to disavow the efforts made by the secretary general … but it would seem very important to guarantee the serenity that is required for these dialogues,”
stated Solís.
Venezuela formally began the OAS exit process in late April, after accusing the hemispheric entity of promoting an international intervention in the country.
Solís ended his official visit to Spain, where he met the head of government, Mariano Rajoy, the king Felipe VI, and businessmen. He will continue his European tour on Wednesday and Thursday in the Netherlands and Friday in the United Kingdom.
