Gay activists protested on Monday against the president of the Congress, Gonzalo Ramírez, and the presidential candidate of the National Liberation Party (PLN), Antonio Álvarez Desanti, with a controversial banner in the legislative plenary.
The activists placed a sign that says: “Human rights are non-negotiable!” accompanied by a drawing in which Álvarez Desanti and Ramírez are kissing.
Demonstrators also carried banners to ask for approval of egalitarian and secular marriage.
Legislators from the National Liberation Party (PLN) and the Citizen Action Party (PAC) said the image was disrespectful.
Ramírez asked the activists to remove the banner and warned them that if they didn’t, he’s ordered security officials to do so.
I’m not offended by that sign, but there must be respect,”
said Ramírez.
