The Venezuelan opposition parliament rejected the bases of the National Constituent Assembly activated on Tuesday by President Nicolás Maduro.
The National Assembly said in a statement they do not recognize the bases for the convening of a fraudulent National Constituent Assembly following a unanimous agreement by the opposition.
It is a scam so that it is not the people who choose, they are going to decide which sector to vote for, who to vote for, and when to choose… What Maduro proposes is that he will determine who is who, who is a construction worker, who is an entrepreneur, and he is going to say who votes,”
said Julio Borges, president of the opposition parliament, during a legislative debate.
The constitutional bases of the Constituent Assembly, which Maduro delivered on Tuesday to the electoral power, contemplate the election of 540 assembly members, one part by municipal vote and another by social sectors, including workers and communal councils.
Maduro explained that 364 of the assembly members who will modify the Constitution will be chosen by municipal election and 176 will be elected by eight groups, which must be submitted to the National Electoral Council (CNE).
The electoral power, accused of serving the government, will determine the sectors that can run for election.
The opposition has denounced that the government wants to guarantee control of the assembly members elected by these sectors. Maduro is rejected by seven out of ten Venezuelans, according to polls.
What Nicolas Maduro has announced is nothing more than the continuation of a coup against the Constitution,”
said Borges.
