The Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) announced the places where pedestrians are assaulted the most in San José.
So far this year, the OIJ reports 2550 complaints of assaults in places where they mainly steal electronic items such as cell phones and computers.
In total, four gangs have been identified assaulting in the capital between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. in the following places:
Central Park
La Merced Park
10 avenue
The Coca Cola Market
Barrio La California – Los Yoses
Authorities say most assaults occur from pedestrians to pedestrians, as well as from individuals traveling on motorcycles.
OIJ Assault Division Chief, Marco Carrión, asked people to keep track of the invoices for traceable products such as cell phones and computers. These are the most sought after.
They also ask for no resistance, as the subjects are willing to confront the victims. It is estimated that 20% of victims of an assault are injured during the criminal act for simply resisting.
So far this year, four people are reported killed by assaults. In addition, OIJ data reveal that 99% of assailants have criminal records.
Per month, the OIJ arrests 38 assailants who are usually between 16 and 30 years old. However, 80% of the cases cannot be solved.
