The National Environmental Technical Secretariat (SETENA) ordered three pineapple plantations in the Northern Zone to stop its operations.
According to the Ministry of the Environment (MINAE), violations of environmental regulations and environmental viability have been detected in the plantations La Guaria, La Azucena and Concho.
During the inspections, all these farms had problems, such as the fact that the SETENA was not informed of when operations started. Similarly, according to the report made by the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC), sedimentation affects several bodies of water, such as ravines and wetland; and water has moved from sites devoid of vegetation, used for growing pineapple,”
said the MINAE.
In addition, the authorities said that the activity does not have permission from the Ministry of Health.
Moreover, authorities pointed out that the lands were prepared before environmental feasibility was granted.
