As it has been usual in the last three years, Turrialba Volcano experiences one of those periods of greater activity.
In recent days, the colossus increased its internal seismic activity and generated eruptions of considerable intensity.
In one of those events, which occurred at 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, the volcano expelled ballistic blocks towards the southwest sector.
Javier Pacheco, volcanologist of the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI), explained that these blocks are capable of traveling almost 200 meters from the crater.
The chronology of the recent activity is summarized as follows:
-Thursday, September 28th: two ash eruptions recorded between 5:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.
-Friday, September 29th: Ash column rises more than 400 meters above the crater, with eruption occurring at 8:15 a.m.
-Saturday, September 30th: eruptions at 4:30 a.m. (more than 1,000 meters high) and at 10:00 p.m. (600 meters up and expulsion of ballistic blocks).
-Sunday, October 1st: passive eruptions of ash. One reported at 6:00 a.m., whose column rose 500 meters from the crater.
Pacheco said that the internal earthquakes, known as tremors, remain in force with medium intensity.
Isolated exhalations of ash are occasionally present with durations of less than five minutes associated with small explosions with ballistic missiles at close range to the crater. Long-term volcanic earthquakes (LP) continue to occur with moderate to large amplitudes,”
reported OVSICORI.
