The Public Ministry requested a total of 751 years in prison against the five doctors accused for being linked to an alleged network of human trafficking for the purpose of organ harvesting.
Prosecutor Ileana Mora asked the Criminal Court of the First Judicial Circuit of San José to impose a preventive prison period against the five accused, as the measure ensures that they remain subject to criminal proceedings.
Ileana Mora said that the former head of nephrology at the Calderón Guardia Hospital, Mora Palma, took advantage of the vulnerability of the 14 victims. Some of these people were even threatened with death by informal moneylenders,
so they had no other option and agreed to the extraction of a kidney to obtain money in return,”
reported the Public Ministry in a press release.
