A group of students from schools in San Isidro and Carrizal de San Pablo de León Cortés, San Juan and San Miguel de Grecia and the School of Poás de Alajuela, joined the efforts of the Center for Agronomic Research (CIA) of the University of Costa Rica (UCR) for promoting the importance of soil.

According to CIA, it is essential to teach new generations the importance of conserving this valuable resource, since 95% of the food consumed by Costa Ricans comes from it every day.

Similarly, the soils provide ecosystem services that allow life on earth, as well as water purification, climate regulation, food supply and construction materials, flood regulation, among others.

Rafael Mata Chinchilla, specialist in soil of CIA, was responsible for explaining to children and young people about the different layers and materials that make up the soil using a pit or excavation that serves to perform real soil studies.

The idea is that in each farm we had a study of soils to know all the types of soil there are, because each one has different physical and chemical properties and serves different purposes, which is very important to plan the use of the farm,”

explained the researcher.

The CIA joined the World Alliance for Soil and other organizations to celebrate World Soil Day and the International Year of Legumes with the aim of designing different strategies for their protection.
