The judicial authorities investigate two femicides that occurred in the last hours in Liberia and San Carlos. In both cases, the aggressors killed their partners with a knife, causing lethal injuries in the neck.
These cases tarnish the international celebration of the Women’s Day that is being commemorated this week.
The Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) confirmed that the suspects are already in custody and will be presented to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The first case happened in Liberia where a man named Sequeira Duarte attacked his wife and set her on fire after murdering her. The suspect is 32 years old and had no judicial record. The victim was identified as Mariana Leiva Fernández, 36 years old. Sequiera and Leiva were married for 5 years and had shown no signs of domestic violence.
The other case was reported in Florencia de San Carlos, after a farmer found the body of a woman identified as Maritza Vargas, 25 years old. She was attacked by her partner identified as a Nicaraguan named Guadamuz Ramos. The victim had stab wounds to the neck, abdomen and chest. The authorities did have a history of domestic violence by this couple in the community of Grecia de Alajuela.
The 22-year-old suspect had a judicial record for threats and theft. They lived together for two years.
So far this year, the judicial authorities have registered four cases of femicide in the country.
