On Thursday morning, the Fiscal Control Police of the Ministry of Finance seized 133 boxes of avocados valued at $12,500 (more than ¢7 million), in a warehouse located in La Fila de Desamparados.
These avocados were stolen the week before from a container in Caldera, using the bajonazo method. At the time of the robbery, the container was in international transit from Mexico to Panama.
This shipment exceeded the $5,000 limit established in Article 211 of the General Customs Law, so the case must be transferred to the Public Ministry to continue the investigations. In addition, the Treasury will coordinate with the Judicial Investigation Organization (OIJ).
Referring to this operation, Irving Malespín, director of the Fiscal Control Police, explained that
at this moment we are making the final count of the merchandise to then coordinate with the Public Prosecutor, and to determine if there is a possibility of arresting someone for this.”
This operation is the result of an intelligence work carried out by this police force, in coordination with the Ministries of Health and Agriculture and Livestock.
