“Mindful snacking” or conscious feeding refers to the empowerment that people must have to enjoy snacks in a conscious and healthy way, by asking four simple questions.
Mindful snacking is a behavior that promotes eating with conscience, intention and attention,”
explains Silvia Sáenz, nutritionist of Mondelēz International.
According to Sáenz, many times people eat the first thing they find, without asking themselves some basic questions that become actions that help maintain a balanced diet and enjoy meals, including snacks, in a better way.
We must start by choosing the snack in a rational way, then we must focus on the present moment and make each bite count. It is important to avoid distractions such as talking or checking your phone or computer. This way we will feel renewed and full of energy, while eliminating any guilt that may be associated with the food,”
explained the nutritionist.
Another point emphasized by Sáez is controlling the portions to be consumed as well. In the case of snacks, a controlled portion is one that is less than 200 calories.
What are the four questions?
1. Why do you need the snack? Energy, pause in your day, hunger, social situation?
2. What are you looking for? Do you crave a certain flavor or texture? Something sweet, salty, cold, or hot?
3. What is the portion? Check the amounts to be consumed and slow down when chewing to stay present in the moment and savor the experience using your senses.
4. Are you satisfied? Evaluate and pay attention to when you feel satisfied. Does it meet your needs? Do you feel under control?
