More than 90% of graduates from public and private universities in the country have a job. This was determined by the most recent study carried out by the Labor Observatory of Professionals of the National Council of Rectors (Conare).
Of the total graduates, 78.4% of them are wage workers, while 12.1% are independent workers. As for the areas that show better employment indicators are: Statistics, Microbiology, Optometry, Production Administration, and Criminal Law. On the other hand, the disciplines with unfavorable indicators are Biology, Geography, Journalism, Preschool Education, and Respiratory Therapy.
According to Marcelo Prieto, president of the National Technical University and president of Conare, in the country there are no studies required to guide the thousands of students who complete their studies on major with higher labor demand.
Nilsen Gutiérrez, researcher of the Observatory, pointed out that students continue to choose majors according to their inclinations and the prestige of the career. The research also indicates that 65% of graduates come from households whose parents do not have university degrees.
In addition, 84% of the professionals come from the four central provinces (San José, Alajuela, Cartago and Heredia), mainly because they are the areas with the greatest number of employment sources.
The study compiles information from 133 disciplines on employment, study financing, employment-career relation, among other variables.
