June ended with striking seismic statistics: there were 112 earthquakes of different magnitude. However, this meant 205 earthquakes less compared to May of this year.
Only 10 of those events were perceptible for the population. In May, that figure was 17. In fact, June 2018 had the lowest number of telluric movements since March 2013 (62). The information was confirmed by the National Seismological Network (RSN).
The bulk of registered movements occurred in the Central Pacific (sea and inland), as well as in the central part of the national territory.
The highest intensity earthquake was 4.6 degrees. It had a depth of 176 kilometers and it happened on the 19th. This event was located 7 km south of Upala, Alajuela, and was perceived slightly in Nandayure and El Coco, Guanacaste. On the other hand, the smallest earthquake recorded 2.9 degrees and had a depth of 3 km. This happened on the 9th and its epicenter was located five kilometers northwest of Rivas de Pérez Zeledón,”
stressed the RSN.
Eight of the 10 earthquakes detected during the month were due to local faults, while the rest occurred due to subduction of the Cocos plate beneath the Caribbean plate.
