On October 4th, Germany issued an alert to its citizens due to the national strike of unions that oppose the tax plan in Costa Rica. Through the German Information Center for Latin America, tourists receive recommendations on “travel and security” to this Central American country.
A general strike continues nationwide leading to restrictions in the public sector and roadblocks in and around the capital, San José. Access to the San José International Airport also has considerable delays. Meanwhile, security forces are taking action against street blockades and violent conflicts cannot be ruled out. Travelers are asked to stay informed, plan ahead, and avoid the crowds,”
says the publication.
Therefore, the Costa Rican Association of Tourism Professionals (Acoprot) ensures that this is only a sample of the current image of the country, which is a clear disadvantage for Costa Rica’s interests.
As professionals of the tourism sector of the country, and aware of the importance of this in the Costa Rican economy, our call is addressed to the parties in dispute so that they can civilly reach an agreement that benefits us all. Our concern for recent events that diminish the good international image we enjoy is justified and that is why we insist on this call to resolve our differences through dialogue and the Costa Rican tradition,”
said President Massi Devoto.
In addition, this page warns of the “dangers” in the country, where armed assaults stand out in tourist centers such as beaches and downtown San José.
The risk of crime in Costa Rica is high (…) Special attention is recommended in San José and on the beaches. On the Caribbean coast, the areas of the port cities of Moín and Limón are particularly violent, and there are also armed robberies in the popular tourist centers of Cahuita and Puerto Viejo. Be careful with helping people,”
added the publication.
The tourism sector has reported millions in losses due to the national strike, which has forced the cancellation of cruises, hotel reservations, among others.
