RECOPE Union agrees to end the strike that was declared illegal

October 10, 2018 by Staff News Writer

The Union of Petroleum, Chemical and Allied Workers (SITRAPEQUIA) agreed to end the strike movement initiated on September 10th and the union officials will resume their work on Thursday.

This was confirmed by the Costa Rican Petroleum Refinery (RECOPE), through a press release issued at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The decision was made after a meeting held between both parties at about noon.

The agreement was signed by Alejandro Muñoz, head of the refinery; Manuel Rodríguez, Secretary General of SITRAPEQUIA, and a representative of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS).

On September 27th, the Labor Court of the Second Judicial Circuit of San José determined the strike was illegal because it failed to comply with all the requirements established for its legal development. The court also determined that there was no impact on essential services.

Muñoz explained that the union was the one to request the meeting on Tuesday to comment on the decision.
