On Sunday, Mr. Rodolfo Badilla made a publication on Facebook in order to show how dangerous it is for animals to travel through the northern tip of the new San Carlos road, which links Ciudad Quesada with La Florencia.
Badilla, an English teacher and bicycle lover, published the images of two animals he found dead on the road after being run over. He found them less than 500 meters away from each other, so he decided to alert the population.
In an interview with CRHoy.com, he said that as a neighbor of Ciudad Quesada he has the responsibility to make a call to raise awareness, because although the new route represents more comfort for the drivers, it is also a new challenge for the wild animals of the area.
We know that the human being, just by existing is causing involuntary damages, (…) We have to make some kind of compensation and one way to do it is to be more attentive and put comfort of arriving [to our destination] faster a little aside, and be aware that this environment is full of animals that are going to try to cross [the road],”
said Badilla.
According to a campaign of the State University at a Distance (UNED), in Costa Rica more animals are killed in road accidents than as a result of hunting.
