Turrialba Volcano has been active 58% of the year

December 26, 2018 by Staff News Writer

Turrialba Volcano started a new eruptive period on Wednesday, after several days without major activity.

According to the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) the small but constant eruptions started at around 8:00 a.m. and were followed by reports of sulfur odor in Coronado.

On the other hand, the internal seismic activity remains scarce.

Scientists determined that this volcano has been active 194 out of the 336 days it has been studied in 2018, which means more than 58% of the time.

The periodic eruptions in this volcano are characterized by constant emanations of gas, ash and ballistic blocks around the crater.

According to the scientific report, the important periods of activity during this year were August-September, February-March, May and October.
