On Saturday afternoon, a group of sunbathers who enjoyed the sea in Jacó, Puntarenas, warned that a crocodile was prowling near the mouth of a river near the beach.
Immediately, tourists were told to leave due to the threat of the reptile, which looked at them from 30 meters inside the water and only with its head outside.
At that time there were more than 50 people near the site where the animal was sighted.
Despite the movement of people, the crocodile remained motionless, as if looking around, as seen in a video captured by the people who spotted it first and gave notice to other tourists to leave the water.
According to biologists, this is normal because the tourist zones are the habitats of this type of reptile, especially the mouths of rivers, beaches and mangroves, among other types of places near the sea.
The Central Pacific, where Jacó is located, is the area where there is a higher risk of crocodile attack. In Garabito de Puntarenas there are records of crocodile attacks on people who have lost their lives. The risk increases during high tourist season due to the large influx of people to the beaches of that area, the closest to the Great Metropolitan Area (GAM).
