Costa Rica is one of the countries affected by computer attacks that originated from North Korea, according to the 2019 M-Trends cybersecurity report published by the US firm Eye Fire, which indicates that there were attacks from that country that damaged government and banking information systems.
The analysis indicates that North Korea was one of the countries of origin of the largest number of cyber espionage campaigns during 2018. Intense attacks against financial entities were also reported.
In fact, North Korea is identified as the operator of multiple destructive attacks, conventional espionage operations, and bank robberies.
The study indicates that the North Koreans have probably increased their participation in these activities due to an increase in financial pressure for sanctions against that country. For example, they are publicly linked by theft of more than $ 1.1 billion to financial institutions around the world.
Esteban Jiménez, specialist in Cybersecurity from the company ATTI CYBERLABS, explained that these attacks were not directed to Costa Rica specifically, but rather, the attacks were massive, by means of automatic scanners that look for vulnerabilities and found them in the country.
