Volcanic activity continues in Rincón de la Vieja Volcano. Another eruptive episode was registered this Wednesday at 6:17 am, according to scientific entities.
The Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) confirmed the event, which had a height of one kilometer above the crater.
In total, the activity remained constant for two minutes. However, the weather conditions at that time prevented the cameras installed near the colossus to capture the precise moment of the eruption.
On April 1st there was a similar explosion, as well as in January, which killed large numbers of fish and crocodiles.
25 kilometers from Liberia and with a height of more than 1.9 kilometers, the Rincón de la Vieja is classified as one of the “most explosive” volcanoes in the country.
With less fame and noise than others (like Turrialba or Poás), this massif is one of the most active of recent years.
Guillermo Alvarado, volcanologist at the National Emergency Commission (CNE) and the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE), explained last January that Rincón de la Vieja was reactivated in 2011 and highlighted that between 1995 and 1998 there were relevant events.
As a striking fact, the volcano does not have the active crater in a horizontal position. It is inclined towards the northeast flank and therefore, when an eruption occurs, the material and sound waves are perceived towards that sector.
Because of these conditions, unlike other volcanoes, the main danger is not in the explosive output of incandescent material. It is in the lahars.
