Interpol is looking for priest Mauricio Víquez Lizano, as a suspect of rape, as shown by the publication of a red alert.
The 54-year-old man still has a complaint before the Sexual Offenses Prosecutor’s Office, as well as nine canonical complaints for the alleged crimes of rape and sexual abuse.
In December, the Episcopal Conference received information about the criminal complaint against Víquez and warned him about it.
The priest is out of the country since January 7th when he traveled to Panama. On the 9th of that same month, he left for Mexico, and to date he remains in flight.
The nine canonical accusations against Víquez are for alleged sexual abuse against altar servers and join two canonical denunciations against the Archbishop of San José Monsignor José Rafael Quirós for concealing the facts, since he knew about the accusations against Víquez in 2003 and it was not until 2018 when he took action.
Víquez is not the only Costa Rican priest to whom an arrest warrant has been issued; the same thing happened with Enrique Vázquez, in 1998, when he left the country after being denounced for abuses.
