The cases of measles in the world quadrupled during the first three months of this year, compared to the same period in 2018, warned the WHO on Monday and added that in Africa the increase was 700%.
As of today, in 2019, 170 countries have reported 112,163 cases of measles to the WHO. Last year on the same date, 28,124 cases of measles had been recorded in 163 countries. This represents an increase of almost 300% worldwide,”
said the UN agency in a statement after stating that these are provisional figures.
Measles is one of the most serious diseases in the world. Its consequences range from the reduction of defenses to death. Although it also affects adults, newborns and children under 10 are at greatest risk.
Due to the increasing number of cases in the continent, the health authorities will hold an extraordinary vaccination period against this virus from this Wednesday.
If this disease attacks children under 1 year old, the consequences in the future would be devastating, because there is a likelihood that when they reach 10 or 13 years old, they lose all skills, that is, they cannot eat nor move.
