The National University called on foreign and national tourists to avoid extracting wildlife from the areas they choose to visit.
The number of tourists who take advantage of Holy Week to travel on different national roads, to recreation centers such as protected areas, national parks or nature reserves, becomes the main trigger that causes serious injuries to wildlife,”
said Mauricio Jiménez, director of the Hospital of Minor and Wild Species of the National University (Hems-UNA).
The reckless speed in the vicinity of protected reserves, forest fires generated by uncontrolled fires, as well as ill-intentioned people who throw garbage into rivers, feed wild animals or buy birds from poachers, are the main causes that risk the natural ecosystem and even public health these days,”
added Jiménez.
The director indicated that people who find wild offspring should not touch them, much less moved from the place, as it is common for the parents of those puppies or chicks to temporarily leave them in a place to go in search of food.
If the parents of the offspring perceive a threat (the presence of people), they become frightened and choose to abandon the creatures. The best thing to do is to get away from the place slowly and immediately contact the authorities of the National System of Conservation Areas (Sinac) through the 911 emergency service,”
explained Jiménez.
