20 earthquakes shook Cartago in less than three hours

October 10, 2019 by Staff News Writer

The night and dawn was quite busy for the residents of Cartago, where 20 earthquakes were recorded in less than five hours.

The most intense earthquake was a 4.4 tremor that occurred at 12:18 am, five kilometers east of Orosi at a depth of six kilometers, as reported by the National Seismological Network (RSN) to CRHoy.com.

Ivonne Arroyo, the entity’s seismologist said they are still reviewing the failures to determine what happened.

We are still working on the aftershocks. We still do not know which fault is the cause of this activity, but it could be a similar or parallel to the failures of Orosi or Duan. If they are not those, it is a similar one. Throughout the country we have many seismic sources, we live in a subduction zone. The intensities in the epicentral area were between 4 and 5,”

explained Arroyo.

It is not a matter of concern but of care, in matters of how we build or how we behave during an event. They are likely to continue. The day before yestarday we also had two events near El Tejar de El Guarco. It is an area that trembles a lot,”

said the seismologist.

According to the expert, several users reported feeling the earthquakes in the area of Cartago and nearby.
