The increasing activity in Rincón de la Vieja volcano forced the experts to monitor the crater more frequently.
Gino González, volcanologist from the Research Center in Geological Sciences (CICG), went to the top of the volcano for a new inspection, which revealed a five-meter decrease in the water levels of the lake in the crater, exposing several terraces of volcanic material, caused by old eruptions or landslides.
Normally, the lake’s temperature ranges between 28°C and 30 °C. However, we recorded temperatures up to 40 °C, which causes the lake to evaporate,”
added González.
Among other things, little to no rain is also mentioned in the area, along with the constant water and gas release, and the seepage in the crater.
