Diana Reyes, an Olympic athlete, confirmed her 2-month pregnancy and stated that her condition won’t stop her from playing with Puerto Rico’s volleyball team. She is sure that her participation in Rio won’t risk her pregnancy.
I’m here, I’ll be a mom. I’m protecting myself and there is nothing to fear,
declared Reyes.
Despite being in a country highly affected by Zika virus, the expectant mom assures that she’ll participate in the Games. It is considered to be especially dangerous for pregnant women because microcephaly cases were detected in children whose mothers were infected with zica during pregnancy.
The virus caused that elite athletes abandoned the Games and some countries recommended pregnant women did not to travel to Brazil.
In London 2012, US beach volleyball player Kerri Walsh-Jennings won the gold medal while pregnant.
