Fabricio Alvarado, legislator from RestauraciĆ³n Nacional, introduced a bill that aims to close the National Institute for Women (INAMU) to create the Institute for Family and Gender Equality (IFAG).
According to the legislator, the purpose is to expand the range and quality of programs received by women through a new entity that actually defends them and empowers them and that not only addresses their needs.
It also aims to protect women’s participation in the family and guarantee its stability by creating an institute of the Family.
Alvarado believes that the adequate stability of the family should be assured instead of just protecting one of its parts, as the INAMU did.
The new institution, according to the proposal, would be financed with resources from the Central Government and with funds from the Fund for Social Development and Family Allowances (FODESAF).
He explained that the amendment was drafted with the participation of different social and political organizations, as well as the contributions of Costa Rican families.
