A bill introduced by legislator José Ramírez, from Frente Amplio, aims to give a professional status to the foreign service.
As explained by the official, the main objective is that diplomatic and consular posts are occupied by those who are properly trained to do so.
The initiative also aims to regulate the hiring of administrative and technical staff to promote the professionalization of these positions and it allows Law, Economy and International Relations professionals to be part of the Foreign Service.
The proposal encourages the good use of qualified human resources in the diplomatic career, as well as job positions for ambassadors appointed by a commission and it stipulates that lower-ranking diplomats should be a priority.
