American Expatriate Costa Rica

A hurricane has never directly hit Costa Rican soil in 174 years of record

If hurricane Otto touches Costa Rica it will set a precedent: never before such phenomenon has occurred.

This was confirmed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on information replicated on Tuesday by The Weather Channel.

NOAA has only one registered tropical storm (which made landfall), on the Pacific side in its database of 174 years. There is no record of a hurricane that has passed through Costa Rica, according to the database of NOAA. Otto could be the first in history,”

explains the publication.

According to the center, Otto would made landfall on Caribbean coasts of Costa Rica and Nicaragua on Thursday.

On Tuesday, the government of the Republic issued a red alert for the entire Caribbean. In addition, they anticipate evacuations of up to 4 thousand people in coastal communities.

The areas at the highest risk are located from Calero Island and Parismina Barras, Colorado and Tortuguero. President Solís asked the public to follow the instructions of the National Emergency Commission (CNE).
