Twelve Costa Rican patients will be operated by surgeon Luis de la Torre Mondragón, who discovered a technique to correct a congenital malformation known as aganglionic megacolon or Hirschprung’s disease.
Surgeries will be performed at Max Peralta hospital and they will be carried out within the framework of the 1st Symposium on Pediatric Colorectal Diseases that was organized by the services of Surgery and Pediatric Surgery of the hospital.
Hirschprung’s disease is considered a congenital disease of the newborn and occurs in one child for every 5,000 births and consists of a large bowel obstruction due to poor muscle movement in the intestine.
Luis de la Torre Mondragón is one of the surgical authorities with more experience in this pathology. Costa Rican specialists aim to learn from the technique.
The symposium is organized by the Pediatric Surgery Service of the Max Peralta Hospital and the Cancer Control Association (ACOLUCG) and it is aimed at professionals who treat patients with chronic constipation and rectal anomalies.
The institution intends to share with experts from the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh (UPMC) Clinic of Colorectal Malformations and Intestinal Management (UPMC) and to strengthen the care provided to children and their families.
The symposium brings together 53 health professionals from different areas of the country, including hospital staff, who met to learn more about the management of patients with chronic constipation, anorectal malformations and other pathologies in children.
None of the invited experts are charging for their services, they do it for free and voluntarily, to support parents and the Hospital Center that extended the invitation.
The symposium will run until today.
